Okay...had an E-mail come in from someone who I have no clue who they are or what they were doing...but here's the deal.
''Hey is this pilot? Hai, smthing happend to my computer i cant play JA anymore. I think its a virus as my norton anti thing said it had to remove my ja game, but it didnt say why. I have the disc but idk, something i think i downloaded and put in the base, like a skin? can you help me? I heard youz were working in windows."
Okay...um..first of all who the hell spread that? That I work with 'Microsoft'? I do actually, the Department of Research and Development, aka, IT center. Not in anyway part of the main center, its a small cluster of Beta testers and programmers, a division of sorts that I'm part of...mostly for XP...(Ironically, I don't even use XP anymore..I'm still on the roster till XP kicks the bucket in '11.)
Lol, then I found this article before I responded to the email...
www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32644736/ns/technology_and_science-tech_and_gadgets/
Huh, so now they be picking on freedom fighters' products n big corporation's effort to give the good people free complimentary (And in some cases supplementary protection?) Good f**king grief. Well, not everything can be trusted actually...well anyways. Back to the point of this thread.
I've been getting too many emails from here, I know its from RS cause I got one email that was in Russian-French something language...O.O (Thought it was spam bots but the address checks out and the name they call me...not many people know me as that.)
Ya ya..let me get back on it.
Okay, lets make it very clear, this is not for the "I'm STUPID" people...well, it can be if you read carefully.
Computers plus internet. They are a wonderful combination. They practically have to be together. You can do all sorts of things on it..but there's also a bad side to this great world dream.
You guys remember hoodlums, robbers, muggers, etc? Well, believe it or not, its online as well. Face reality, not a myth. Just cause you don't see it doesn't mean its there. If you were one of the unlucky ones a few days ago, a large surplus of malware was detected by several security sites, like Microsoft, Panda, McAfee, etc. It seemed to divide and be destroyed by many of the anti viruses we have in place..well we were wrong. It was minor..but the malware were scripts intended on attacking internet nodes, host servers to connect. The nodes crashed and an outage occurred, after which security sites launched firing solutions to get rid of the problem. All is well...
Anyways, to prevent stuff from happening to you, I made this for the purpose of helping others who don't have a clue of what their safety status is online.
First of all you have to be running either Windows XP or Windows Vista, I cannot help with other OSs, if you still want me to try, pm plz.
For this course, you will need.
A Legitimate, registered copy of Windows XP or Vista.I CANNOT WORK WITH ILLEGITIMATE SOFTWARE, the programs you have to download need to be validated by Microsoft Gateway.
You Must be logged in as ADMINISTRATOR or have access to an ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT.
I highly recommend and ask if that unit you are fixing is yours and this my friends is only for Small Businesses and Home/Private use.
Finally, Strong internet connection. At least...512kbit/s/128kbit/s for uploading and downloading.
Windows XP
Most of the security crap you can find by doing Start>Control Panel>Security Center. Its a one step stop to it. Something that looks a lot like this.
If it doesn't, or you cannot find it, then my friend, you are either.
1. Out of date on your SP or Security Updates for XP.->
2. Your copy is ILLEGAL. Be sure->
3. You are either have too much stuff on your computer or are as dumb as hell...XD (Jking on the last part)
(1.) Alright, after you have located your Security Center, we can start the security check. If you cannot find it, then do this.
Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Or if you don't' see it->Control Panel->Security->Automatic Updates.
After that, set it too look like this. BUT! Make sure you set it to a time when YOU ARE ON THE COMPUTER AND ARE CONNECTED TO TEH INTERNET. Recommended to set to Daily at around a time you are idle, like usually 5:00 PM for most, or if you're in school, at around 12:00 P.M. Never leave it for like 3:00 A.M. as more than likely, your computer is not going to be ON.
IF you for some reason do not see this then you must go to this website..however, depending on what you are running, it can very drastically. If you see this.
OUT OF DATE, FORMERLY KNOWN AS WINDOWS UPDATE
Newer updated MICROSOFT WINDOWS UPDATE.
Here it gets complicated so listen up. You MUST DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL ALL RECOMMENDED AND REQUIRED UPDATES. This means, if you want it fast, simple, cut to the chase, important and painless, then you must do Express. To get ALL the GOODIES and even more, beta products as well as hardware updates, do Custom. THIS IS OPTIONAL AND SOME MAY ACTUALLY NOT BE NEEDED BY YOUR COMPUTER. DOWNLOAD AT OWN RISK, READ THE DESCRIPTION UNDER THE UPDATE.
After you have gone through the procedure, then you may continue on your check, you may have to sign some agreements or the like...but really. To play JA you have to have at least SP2 with teh important updates..unless you are as blind as a bat.
(2.) Lets start with teh most important thing of all, and it even comes free of charge with your copy of Windows XP SP3. Look at the first bullet on the Security Center. It reads FIREWALL. Click it. It should be GREEN with ON at the TOP RIGHT. If its not, then you have a problem. You have either....
Yellow=Not Monitored-It varies on bad or good.
Red=OFF-You have a problem.
Solutions to these are as follows.
Usually it tells you or gives you a Recommendation button, you can click it and do what it recommends.
One, turn on Windows Firewall. Its the most basic Firewall you can get and ofc, free. Accessing this is easy. Start>Control Panel>Windows Firewall or Start>Control Panel>Security>Firewall.
Two, install your own personal firewall. Beware, not many companies offer free firewalls, you must pay a hefty price, usually a subscription that can total up around $99.99 USD. and not many of these work well with the Security Center. Best to go free.
Three, have your own Firewall from an ISP and not monitor it. If windows can't pick it up it may not be safe.
(3.) Next button, after this is done is to check your AUTOMATIC UPDATES. This is right under Firewall and should look and say GREEN, ON or OK.
If not, it will say OFF.
To fix...
Simply turn on Automatic Updates with teh button that appears! XD Be sure to set it to a time you will be online and using the computer, or online but not at the computer.
(4.) Virus Protection. It has to say ON and be green light. If not it may say these things. Solutions are as follows. IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED TO CLICK THE RECOMMENDED BUTTON ON THIS TAB.
Yellow=Not Monitored. To fix, simply click to Change or Recommend this one time, then unchecked the box that you see.
RED=Out Of Date. This means your Virus Protection has either has its definitions outdated or it is in need of an upgraded version. Please resort to your Anti Virus software and update it.
RED=NOT DETECTED/NOT INSTALLED. Worst case scenario. Either Windows can't detect it..or YOU DON'T HAVE ONE! Please download one that suits you at your pleasure.
(5) By this point your Security Center should have all GREEN Lights. If so, it is safe to close it out and congrats. You have just secured your computer's safety and security nexus. NOW! One thing remains.
Spyware. Microsoft made a free program for Vista...but XP needed some as well, since Spyware is not detectable by most Anti Viruses. Spyware has a different track as well as Adware. Please...DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING THAT HAS AD BLOCK, AD SPRAY, ADWARE, in its name as a software. There is an AD BLOCK PLUS for FIRE FOX, that is not what I'm talking about and is actually a good thing to have. Microsoft does not endorse it and nor should you have it as YOU DON'T NEED IT. Here is what you need.
www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx Its free, and easy to use. All you have to do is click next on all it asks for, agree to the agreement and terms of use, yes to validate it, and finally click RECOMMENDED to install. After that, you leave it alone and it does its work. Deleting Spyware, Adware, etc. Think of it as a final check to make sure you didn't miss anything.
After all this is done and through, you should be good to go. Secured, protected. Go have fun with nothing to worry about..just plz stay away from stupid ad sites...and plz, DO NOT DOWNLOAD STUFF IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE IT CAME FROM!!! Limewire is very safe to use with avast!'s P2P shield...but want something even better and more secure? Use the Fire Fox Version of it, Frostwire.
You have Corporate crap...if you use Lime or IE.
Alright...that's been said and done, now for our lovely Windows Vista.
(1) Open Security Center by if you're DUMB LIKE MEH. Start>Security Center, or Do it in the Search Bar at teh bottom!
You should have this thing.
(2) First Tab, same as XP, except...YOU MUST HAVE WINDOWS FIREWALL ON AND RUNNING. If its Green and says okay then good....however.
Red-<Reason>-It has its own fail safe to keep you safe. Follow the instructions that are listed.
WARNING: RUNNING TWO OR MORE FIREWALLS CAN CAUSE THEM TO CONFLICT WITH ONE ANOTHER. Make sure, if your Anti Virus, etc, comes with a Firewall, either have that running and let Windows Firewall shut itself down...or shut your own down and let Windows handle it.
(3) Automatic Updating. You know what the hell to do, set it to a date and time you will be online and on or off the computer. Computer must be on to do this. Make sure its set to ON.
(4) Malware Protection. You MUST have, Virus Protection and Spyware & Other Protection. Windows Defender is installed for your convenience for Spy-ware, however, you must get your own Virus Protection. IT IS NOT OPTIONAL, IGNORANCE WILL BE FATAL. Must be ON.
(5) Other Security Settings. K, this here is at your own preferences. It has User Account Management and Internet Settings. All should be by standard set to Recommended and it should show up OK. Keeping User Account Management on is on your own risk, but beware if you turn it off. Vista will not alert you to changes.
K...with that crap done, you are all set to play...however, I leave a few notes.
One. Firewalls. Please don't be stupid, if you see this.
Its similar in XP. Please do not be stupid to leave this and it says Jedi Academy MP...please do not leave it alone. CLICK UNBLOCK! PLEASE! Or you cannot play!
Two. WE ARE IN 2009 PEOPLEZ. DO NOT BE DUMB. THESE ARE TEH NEWEST RELEASES FOR WINDOWS.
OR Pick yer choice, both are compatible with Lucas Arts Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy!
Three, any questions please PM or post in this thread. I'll probably post another Thread soon over Cleaning up Computers effectively. Anyways, hope this clears up things.
